Noted in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (Essex, 1916-1923): "Font: tapering octagonal bowl on modern central shaft and four smaller shafts alternately round and octagonal, with crudes bases and capitals, late 12th-century." In Bettley & Pevsner (2007): "Late C12, a crude tapering bowl on four shafts with C19 central shaft." Noted in The Church of England web site for Strethall [http://www.achurchnearyou.com/strethall-st-mary-the-virgin/] [accessed 21 September 2010]: "The font dates from the 12th Century at which time it may have been recut".
