Church Notes: Notable cruciform church of the 11th century, pre-Conquest, possibly erected by Canute ca. 1020 to commemorate victory over Edmund Ironside at Assandun -- the RCHM (Essex, 1916-1923, vol. 1: 145) notes the presence of a now covered well, known as St. Botolph's well, in the churchyard

Noted in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (Essex, 1916-1923): "Font: square bowl with chamfered angles, circular stem, square chamfered plinth, probably late 12th or early 13th-century, much scraped and restored." The British Listed Buildings database [http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-121984-church-of-st-botolph-hadstock] [accessed 8 July 2010], however, notes: "font with a C14 bowl on a stem and base which is probably of Saxon origin. The font cover is C17-C18." The RCHM entry (ibid.) notes also the font cover: "with central post, having turned knob, supported by bracket-shaped boards, probably 17th or early 18th-century."
