There are three entries for Birchanger [variant spellings] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TL5022/birchanger/] [accessed 14 October 2020], none of which mentions cleric or church in it, although one of the parts was in the lordship of Tezelin the Priest in 1086. The Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (Essex, 1916-1923) reports: "Font: octagonal, plain moulded bowl, stem ornamented with cusped panels, late 15th-century." Bettley & Pevsner (2007) note the Norman nave of this church, but do not mention a font in it. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: TL5073022781] notes: "A small flint and stone building of early C12 origin with an early C13 chancel which is undivided externally from the nave. It was extensively restored in the C19 with an addition to the north side. The round west tower was destroyed in the C18 and there is now a modern bellcote. The nave has a west doorway of circa 1125 (reset) and there is a blocked south doorway of similar date. [...] Fittings include a C15 font". [NB: we have no information on the earlier font of this church]
