Noted in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (Essex, 1916-1923): "Font; octagonal, quatrefoil panelled bowl, with embattled rim and moulded and carved lower edge, panelled stem, 15th-century, partly defaced." In Bettley & Pevsner (2007) with date in the 15th century. The 'defacing' mentioned in the RCHM refers to one of the sides of the basin having had its carving hacked or chiselled off almost entirely, to the point that it looks unfinished; why was it done? A tight fit at one point? The octagonal wooden cover is a low pyramid, almost flat; appears old: 17th-18th century?
