Noted with an illustration in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (Essex, 1916-1923) "In S. aisle, E. of S. doorway, square bowl in form of cushion capital, richly carved with foliage and a neast's head, early 12th-century [...] recess and pillar modern". Pevsner (1976) describes it as a "Norman ornamental carving with a head and leaves l[eft] and r[ight], used as a stoup (S aisle)." The front side of the quadrangular object is decorated with the typical Norman motif of an inverted lion-head that has foliage as indicated in Pevsner above. Bettley & Pevsner (2007) report a neo-Norman baptismal font of 1863 in this church. [NB: we have no information on the medieval font -- cf. Index entry for Castle Hedingham No. 2 for a stoup of the 16th century also listed for this church]
