Church Notes: noteworthy detached bell-cote in the shape of a roofed cage
Noted in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (Essex, 1916-1923): "Font: octagonal bowl with panelled sides, each carved with an evangelistic symbol or a seated saint, all defaced; underside of bowl with half-angels at the angles and rosettes between them, buttressed stem with defaced figures under canopies, 15th-century." In Pevsner (1976) and in Bettley & Pevsner (2007): "Font. Octagonal, Perp[endicular], with deliberately defaced figures of the Evangelists and their symbols." [NB: the whole base is in a poor state and the font is now [2010] reinforced with an open metal support all around.]
