Font Notes:
There are ten entries for Wickford [variant spellings] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TQ7493/wickford/] [accessed 18 April 2024] none of which mentions priest or church in it. A font here is noted in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (Essex, 1916-1923): "Font: octagonal bowl with moulded under-edge and base, plain stem, 15th-century, probably partly recut." Pevsner (1976) notes that "some materials from the old church were re-used" in Henry Stone's rebuilding of 1876, namely the roof of ca. 1500 and the 15th-century font. Bettley & Pevsner (2007), however, drop the font from the list of re-used materials from the old church. The font may have been re-cut in the late-19th century renovation of the church by Henry Stone. The Church of St. Andrew, nearby, London Rd., is modern.
