Scene Description: Source caption: "The churchyard of St Clement's, West Thurrock is now a nature reserve as can be seen on the sign on the gate. The church featured in the film Four Weddings and a Funeral and was possibly chosen as there are no houses anywhere near. Thames-side industry, such as the Procter & Gamble soap works seen here, surrounds the churchyard instead."

The Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (Essex, 1916-1923) notes: "Font: octagonal bowl with moulded edge and under-side, on each face in square panel a quatrefoil containing shields alternating with a rose, a four-leaved flower, Agnus Dei and a sun; stem panelled and base moulded, 15th century." In Pevsner (1976): "Font. Perp[endicular], octagonal, with quatrefoil panels." The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Essex, vol. 81983) notes: "The church of West Thurrock was given c. 1090 by the lord of the manor, Robert, count of Eu, to the college of St. Mary in the castle of Hastings [...] The church was declared redundant in 1977 and was closed in 1978. [...] It 1979 it was being converted into a training centre for young, unemployed men, with a small chapel on the north side. Most of the furniture and fittings, and the bells, have been removed, but the monuments remain. [...] The font, which is octagonal, is of the 15th century." Bettley & Pevsner (2007) note a tall oak cover as well: "From All Saints, Grays". The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: TQ5931377298] mentions no font in it. [NB: West Thurrock St Stephen's and All Saints' at Grays Thurrock are modern churches].
