Noted in Suckling (1846-1848): "The font of the old church was broken by the falling in of the pile, and the one now in use was brought, as we have seen, from a ruinated church at Gillingham. It is octangular and plain." [NB: Suckling's reference "as we have seen" is to a document that shows the disbursements "on account of rebuilding Kirkley Church" from the 1750s; one of the entries reads: "To the churchwardens of Gillingham for the font... £1. s1"]. The South Norfolk Council web site [www.enterprise-link.co.uk/Gillingham/] notes: "The font at St. Mary's is not as old as the church. Near the south door [by the holy-water stoup?] is the base of a 15th century font belonging to All Saints church. This was found in a cottage garden in the village where it had been used as a garden seat for many years. The bowl of this font is said to have been sold to Kirkley Church, near Lowestoft, for a guinea."
