Font Notes:
Noted in Suckling (1846-1848): "The advowson of the church was long in medieties, and in the reign of Edward I [i.e., 1272-1307]. was presented to by a family which assumed its surname from the village. [...] The Church [...] is a rectory dedicated to St. Nicholas [...] At the west end of the nave stands an octangular font". In Parker (1855) also as octagonal. The National Gazetteer of 1868 reports "an ancient font" in this church. The baptismal font is of the East Anglia type, consisting of an octagonal basin with deeply-carved panels in which are the four symbols of the Evangelists with scrolls alternating with four demi-figures of angels holding shields [NB: Knott (2008) suggests the piece of metal thrusted into the upper middle part of this panel may have been an iconoclastic act: "I assume that it is the head of an axe or pick which has broken off. It probably dates from the 17th century. Puritan attacks on fonts of this kind are familiar in the area south of Bury St Edmunds, but it was the first time I had seen it up here." It is interesting that, if it was an iconoclastic attack on the font, it was a very uncharacteristic one, as most of those carried by Reformers, Commonwealth zealots, etc., usually aimed at the figural and emblematic signs, yet, none of those present on this font were targeted. But, what other explanation would account for such a damage?]; one shield has the emblem of the Trinity on it, another has the Instruments of the Passion, one is blank [no information on the fourth shield]; the underbowl chamfer has two levels: the upper level has cherubs at the angles; the lower level has floral motifs on the panels; the pedestal base is the usual octagonal-to-square shape, with four seated lions alternating with four slender buttresses; raised on an octagonal plinth. The wooden cover is round and flat, with metal decoration and ring handle; appaers modern, probably Victorian. [NB:
