Suckling's (1846-1848) original entry [probably prepared ca. 1830?] read: "The ancient font has disappeared, and in its place stands a wooden pillar, somewhat in shape like the support of a sun-dial. To this is affixed, when required for ther sacrament of baptism, a large silver base, 'The Gift', as we learn from the circunscription, 'of Richard Fuller, Esq., of Fritton Hall, to the parish church of Fritton, in Suffolk, in the year 1769.' This unmeaning, but costly bowl is, therefore, the dedication of tastelessness, but not the offering of parsimony." Suckling's 'addenda et corrigenda' to his first volume [probably done close to the actual printing of the volume, perhaps 1845 or 1846?] reads: "Since the account of Fritton church has been printed, I have been favoured with the following note from the Rev. J. Cubitt, the Rector: 'If not too late, I should feel obliged if you will insert under the head of Fritton, that the anomalous wooden pedestal and silver bowl for a font has been supplanted by a Norman font in stone, a copy of the one at Hartland, Devonshire, as detailed in the Oxford illustrations of baptismal fonts.'" Not (2008), however, notes the font as "recut". [NB: unless Knott [cf. supra] is correct in assuming the font is re-cut, we have no information on the original Norman font of this church -- cf. Index entry for Hartland, for the Norman font in that church]
