There are four entries for Matching [variant spellings] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TL5212/matching/] [accessed 7 June 2018], none of which mentions priest or church in it. The Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (Essex, 1916-1923) notes: "Font: octagonal bowl with moulded under edge and base, on each face a quatrefoil panel containing flowers, shields, etc., one shield with a cross, another with a cheveron; stem panelled with trefoiled and cinquefoiled heads to the panels; 15th-century." The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: TL5251911960] reports: "The font has an octagonal bowl with moulded under-edge and base, on each face a quatrefoil panel containing flowers, shields, etc; stem panelled with trefoiled and cinquefoiled heads to the panels." The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Essex, vol. 8, 1983) notes: "A church probably existed c. 1150, when Hugh, dean of Matching, was recorded [...] The font, which dates from the 15th century, has an octagonal bowl with shields of arms." In Pevsner (1976) and in Bettley & Pevsner (2007): "Font. Octagonal, Perp[endicular], with quatrefoils with shields and flowers."
