There are three entries for this Shelton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TM2291/shelton/] [accessed 15 September 2015]; one of the entries, in the lordship of Roger Bigot and [King] William in 1086, mentions a church and 0.12 hides of church lands in it; the second, in the lordship of Durand in 1086, includes a church and 0.12 hides of church lands in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "This town in the Confessor's time [...] had a church and 16 acres of glebe [...] The Church is dedicated to St. Mary [,..] The present fabrick was built by Sir Ralf Shelton, Knt. [...] and is a fine uniform brick building, having a nave, two isles, and chancel leaded, a square tower, and one bell." Blomefield (ibid.) names "Gilbert de Belawe" (South mediety) and "Henry de Wendling" as first recorded rectors here, in 1305 and 1302 respectively, and "James Herbert" as rector of the whole rectory in 1445, when the two medieties were united. The present font here is noted in James (1930): "The font is of a type common in our counties, having lions on four faces, alternating with angels holding shields." [NB: a similar, though not identical, font can be found at Saxmundham, Suffolk]. Described in Pevsner & Wilson (1999), who mention "four demi-figures of angels holding shields with the Instruments of the Passion, the symbol of the Trinity, three crowns and three chalices." Illustrated in Knott (2005). Octagonal mounted baptismal of a type common in East Anglia: the sides of the octagonal basin are deeply carved with sedente-regardant lions alternating with angels holding shields charged with coats-of-arms; angel heads at the angles of the upper level underbowl chamfer while the lower level has a rosette on each side; the stem of the base has sedente lions alternating with buttresses on the sides; octagonal plinth with kneeling stone extension, made of brick.
