Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "The church is dedicated to St. Giles [...] the steeple is round [...] The Rectors here that I have met with [i.e., first recorded] are, 1314, Thomas de Preston". Lewis' Dictionary of 1848 reports: "the font is elaborately sculptured". James (1930) notes: "At Colby is a font with the Evangelists, and also (quite uncommon) the Virgin and Child throned, a man and woman kneeling, a kneeling man with a hatchet over his shoulder, a dog, and a scroll." Described in Pevsner & Wilson (1997). Knott (2005) describes it as late 15th century, and topped by the Georgians in a rural manner", obviously referring to the 18th-century wooden font cover. Knott (ibid.) points out that the font "is set curiously [...] so that no panel faces east, south, west or north, rather, being off centre. [...] It may have been moved, but the pedestal it stands on does the same thing, and it appears original." This same author has problems accepting the claim that the scene that includes a man with a hatchet and a dog be a representation of the legend of St. Giles protecting the hind, though he does acknowledge that the dedication of the church to this saint and the presence of his relic in the church at one point may both weigh in making such an identification; the other sides include a reclining pair, whom Knott suggests "are almost certainly the two donors of the font", four panels with the symbols of the Evangelists, and an eighth panel "still cemented over". The octagonal stem is decorated with buttresses at the angles and with trefoil windows on the sides, and Knott (ibid.) adds that there are several original brass insets on the church floor near the plinth of the font. [NB: we have no information on the font from the original church here].
