Noted in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (Essex, 1916-1923): "Font: Octagonal, each face of bowl with quatrefoiled panels, six filled with conventional foliage, and two with shields--(a) a bend sinister engrailed with defaced charges thereon; (b) a saltire; panelled stem, 15th-century, base cut away and rough panels cut in sides." In Pevsner (1976): "Font. Perp[endicular], octagonal. Stem with tracery, bowl with quatrefoils carrying fleurons and one shield." Bettley & Pevsner (2007) have "shields" instead of "shield".
