Scene Description: Source caption: "St. John the Baptist church, Great Clacton, Essex. It's hard to believe that before the Victorian era, Great Clacton was just a small village and Clacton-on-Sea would have been just farmland and perhaps the odd cottage. The whole of this area is now built up but you can pick out the original village buildings around the Norman church. The church was badly restored in 1865 but there is a lot of the old left to interest. The 15th century tower was never completed, hence the unusual timber structure on top."

There is an entry for [Great and Little] Clacton in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/XX0000/great-and-little-clacton/] [accessed 12 February 2023]; it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Baptismal font noted with an illustration in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (Essex, 1916-1923): "octagonal bowl with panelled sides carved with three seated figures and two angles holding shields bearing the arms of the Trinity and a cross, 15th-century." In Pevsner (1976): "Font. Octagonal, with three seated figures and two angels holding shields; defaced; C15." Ditto in Bettley & Pevsner (2007). The octagonal pedestal base is modern. [NB: the fabric of the church goes back to the 12th century but we have no information on the earlier font(s) of this church]. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: TM1770816529] notes: "Parish church. C12 Nave and Chancel. C15 West Tower. Alterations to Chancel C14 [...] C15 octagonal font remodelled 1954, panelled sides of bowl with seated figures and 2 angels holding shields."
