The Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (Essex, 1916-1923) entry notes: "Font: octagonal bowl with double-trefoiled panels and shields alternately, three shields with traces of crosses, moulded under-edge with carved flowers, stem with plain pointed panels, 15th-century." The RCHM (ibid) notes also scratchings on the font and other areas dated to the 17th century, as well as a recess for a former stoup in the nave, on the W of the S doorway. In Pevsner (1976): "Font. Octagonal, with trefoils and shields; simple". Bettley & Pevsner (2007) add the C15 date. The British Listed Buildings database [http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-120202-church-of-st-mary-great-bentley] [accessed 5 July 2010] notes: "C15 octagonal font, alternate panels of double trefoils and shields, moulded soffit with carved flowers, stem with 2 centred arches, moulded base"; the church itself is noted as going back to ca. 1130-1140. The wooden cover is octagonal and flat, with metal decoration and ring handle atop; modern.
