The Victoria County History (Essex, vol. 5, 1966) notes: "The earliest known reference to the church of Dagenham was in 1205 [...] Architectural evidence suggests that the church of St. Peter and St. Paul was built early in the 13th century. By c. 1254 it had been appropriated to Barking Abbey [...] The west gallery and font date from the rebuilding of 1801–5." Noted in Pevsner (1976): "Font. bowl on baluster stem." Linda Rhodes, of the Local Studies Centre, Valence House Museum, Dagenham [www.barking-dagenham.gov.uk/4-heritage/dag-village] informs in her 'Old Dagenham Village: Parish Church of St. Peter and St.Paul: a Brief History' that "on the 2nd Sunday in Advent 1800 [...] the tower fell with a tremendous crash onto the nave. The roof, the porch, gallery, font and pews were destroyed". [NB: we have no information on the ca. 1205 font]
