There are two entries for Chingford [variant spellings] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TQ3894/chingford/] [accessed 11 February 2023]; neiher of them mentions cleric or church in it. The Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (Essex, 1916-1923) notes: "Font: In modern church--square bowl, of Purbeck marble, each face with five shallow panels, circular stem with four angle-shafts, and chamfered base, late 12th-century, top modern." In Pevsner (1976): "Font. Purbeck marble, square, C12, with five shallow blank arches to each side of the bowl." Originally from the old church that was abandoned in the 19th century, the font was moved to the newly built church in Chingford Green in 1844 [source: www.chingfordparish.co.uk/history.htm]. Noted in Leach (1975) as a font made of Purbeck marble: "bowl with five panels on each face" [source given: RCHM (C&SW), 1921]. The ntry for the old church in Historic England [Listing NGR: TQ3737293382] notes: "Parish church. Nave of C12 origins; south aisle late C13; west tower and chancel C15; south porch C16. Restored in 1929". The entry for the new church, where the font now stands, in Historic England [Listing NGR: TQ3860494383] notes: "Church. 1844 [...] Interior understood to contain C12 font of Purbeck marble". The font shows clear signs of having undergone a restoration, the whole upper rim area obviously a new stone replacement. Round, flat and plain wooden cover.
