There is an entry for this Bulmer [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TL8440/bulmer/] [accessed 5 October 2015], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Lewis' Dictionary of 1848 reports: "an ancient font of considerable beauty" here. Noted with an illustration in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (Essex, 1916-1923) as one of the best 15th-century fonts in the county: "octagonal, bowl with embattled rim and moulded and carved lower edge, four sides with angels holding plain shields, one side cusped with a shield --a bend impaling a border engrailed, other sides with foliage, a face, etc., panelled stem and moulded base, 15th-century." In Pevsner (1976): "Font. Octagonal, C15; bowl with foliage and angels holding plain shields." Bettley & Pevsner (2007) report a 'Green Man' on the basin side.
