There are four entries for Bowers [Gifford] [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TQ7587/bowers-gifford/] [accessed 16 May 2019] neither of which mentions cleric or church in it. The entry for this church in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (Essex, 1916-1923) reports: "Font: octagonal bowl with moulded under-edge, plain stem and hollow-chamfered base, early 16th-century; font cover: old finial with facets and lozenge-ornament painted gold, red and white, 16th or 17th-century." Only the cover is noted in Pevsner (1976): "Font cover. Polygonal pyramid; C17"; Bettley & Pevsner (2007) date the font early-16th century. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: TQ7559287252] notes: "Church. Mid C14, bell stage added early C16, main restoration 1910. [...] Plain octagonal font, moulded under the bowl. C17 timber pyramid font cover.
