Noted in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (Essex, 1916-1923): "Font: of Barnack stone, square bowl with four attached shafts with moulded capitals and bases, staple in top, late 12th-century, stem modern." In the Victoria County History (Essex, vol. 4, 1956): "The walls are of flint rubble dating mostly from the first half of the 14th century, but mixed with this are blocks of freestone from a 12th-century church. [...] The bowl, set on a later base, is of Barnack stone, square, with angle shafts, and is of the 12th century." Noted in Pevsner (1976): "Font. Square, with attached angle columns, of Barnack stone, late C12." Noted in much the same terms in Bettley & Pevsner (2007).
