Noted in the Royal Commission of Historical Monuments (Essex, 1916-1923): "Font [...] circular tapering bowl with band of interlacing ornament, divided by small round and twisted shafts, early 12th-century, base modern." Reported in Kelly's Directory of 1933: "ancient carved stone Norman font". Noted in Pevsner (1976): "A good C12 example, circular with scrolls, etc. [...] the bowl damaged along the top. Decoration with beaded scrolls, leaves, etc." Ditto in Bettley & Pevsner (2007). The upper part of the basin must have been very damaged and was cut off, leaving the basin shorter; the base is modern.
