Scene Description: Source caption: "The Fosse Way, the Roman road which runs from Exeter to Lincoln passes through the village of Halford at a crossing point of the River Stour so it is possible Christianity first came to the area with the Romans. The church dates back to the 12th century of which the north doorway and the chancel arch still remain."

We found no entry for Halford in the Domesday survey. The Victoria County Histoy (Warwick, vol. 5, 1919) notes: "The early history of the church is rather obscure [...] but the nave dates from about 1150, as shown by the chancel arch and two doorways. [...] The font, probably 14th-century, is octagonal; the bowl is deep with a splayed lower edge, and has in each face a shallow trefoiled ogee-headed panel with foiled spandrels. The stem has a top roll-mould and the base is chamfered. It has a 16th-century tall oak pyramidal cover with crocketed ribs at the angles and a central finial carved with five mitred heads." A font here is noted and illustrated in the Parish website [www.halfordparishcouncil.co.uk/church.aspx] [accessed 8 April 2010]: "14th Century Font with a 16th Century wooden cover". Baptismal font consisting of a polygonal basin with vertical sides decorated with a simple tracery head on each side [perhaps filled earlier with a painted scene or figure?]; chamfered underbowl; plain polygonal stem. The wooden cover is pyramidal, with crocketed arrises; appears Victorian. [NB: the original fabric of the church goes back to the Norman period but we have no information on the earlier font of this church].
