Scene Description: Source caption: "Church of St James the Great, Idlicote. The church, away from the village and in the grounds of the big house, was built of the local lias about 1200, as shown by the round Norman doorway within the later Georgian porch. The shingled bellcote and clock were added in the 1960s."

view of church interior - chancel and east end
Scene Description: Source caption: "Chancel of St James the Great Church. Seen beneath the pendants of a Jacobean screen, the altar is flanked by boards inscribed with the Lord's Prayer, Creed and Commandments and enclosed by 18th-century communion rails. In front of it is a hanging pyx. The 13th-century north wall leans visibly outwards under the weight of the roof."

There is an entry for Idlicote [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SP2844/idlicote/] [accessed 8 January 2014], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The Victoria County History (Warwick, vol. 5, 1949) notes: "The nave dates from the early or mid-12th century [...] Repairs and alterations have been done at various periods. [...] The font is medieval but hard to date: its bowl is a plain cylinder, 2½ ft. in diameter but only 2 ft. high, on a dwarf stem and plain base of square section. It has a late-17th-century flat oak cover with a central turned knob and crowned by six ogee-shaped brackets rising and meeting in a central turned head: the sides of the arms are carved with nail-head or jewel ornament." The CRSBI (2015) notes and illustrates a Romanesque baptismal font here, with reference to the Victoria County History; the font is a monolithic tub from the Norman period, probably 12th century, the date of the fabric of the church; plain cylindrical basin with short square base
