Font Notes:
Noted and illustrated in Autissier (2005): a holy-water stoup made of an original granite capital said to be from the old cathedral of Saint-Corentin, in Quimper, that was totally rebuilt in the 13th century; Autissier (ibid.) informs that the object was found in 1879 built into a façade of a house near the cathedral, and suggests a date towards the last quarter of the 11th century; the object is roughly square, with a round astragal in the shape of rope moulding; the surface of the sides is covered in a pattern of foliage and tendrils. [NB: a presentation at a colloquium held in Lorient in April 2017 [attended by BSI] questioned the assumed existence of an earlier cathedral in Quimper; Yves Gallet, the presenter, also questioned the definition of this stone as 'capital ', seeing that only one side is carved and it does not appear to fit the function -- our own viewing of the object, now located in the open square by the museum entrance, noted that the block has been hollowed at the top and that a side drain hole goes right through the stone to a side, which suggests its use not as a stoup but, perhaps, a lavabo. BSI also suggests that the 11th-century dating usually assigned to it may be too early].
