Font Notes:
An article in 'The Illustrated London News' on 23 November 1850 [reproduced in www.woottonanddrysandford.co.uk/sthelens.htm] informs of the construction of a much-needed new church at Sandford, near Abingdon, and notes: "On the site selected for the new Church are the remains of an ancient chapel, probably belonging to Abingdon Abbey before its suppression; and from the appearance of the stone amongst the ruins, the chapel was no doubt destroyed by fire." [NB: there is no indication of the existence of a font in the old chapel]. The font that came with the new church is a Victorian rendition of Early English: square basin decorated with pairs of trefoil widows that contain symbols (?) on the sides, the lower part trimmed in trefoil arch shapes to match the four angular colonnettes of the base; square lower base and plinth of the same shape. The wooden cover is also square with four panels arranged cross-shape.
