There are two entries for this Appleton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SP4401/appleton/] [accessed 28 May 2015], but neither mentions cleric or church in it. The Victoria County History (Berkshire, vol. 4, 1924) notes: "The development of the building is rather obscure, but the nave is probably of 12th-century date, the north arcade dating from the late in that century. [...] The font has a slightly tapering cylindrical bowl of the 12th century and stands on a circular base with spiral flutings, of which only a part is ancient. The octagonal cover, of steeple form, is of late 17th-century date." Bucket-shaped baptismal font of the Late-Norman period; the basin is totally plain and is raised on a squat circular base decorated with diagonal ribbing and ball motif; this lower base does not appear to have been the original base -if any- and is probably a recycled object adapted as font base. The metal cover is an odd one, shaped like a witch's hat, on an octagonal flat base.
