Lewis' Dictionary of 1848 reports: "a fine stone font with a richly carved oak covering". White's directory for 1857 notes: "The font is of stone with a cover richly carved". Kelly's Directory for 1891 notes: "the font has a curiously carved cover", but does not mention the font itslef. The same is true of Pevsner (1978): "early C18 font cover" [NB: parts of the church go back to the 16th century or earlier]
