INFORMATION

FontID: 11549RAS
Church/Chapel: St.-Ulrichs Kirche / Ulrichskirche
Church Patron Saints: St. Ulrich, Bishop of Augsburg?
Country Name: Germany
Location: Oldenburg, Niedersachsen
Directions to Site: Located in the Ammerland area
Font Location in Church: Inside the church, in the NE side of the nave, near the altar
Date: ca. 1250-1260?
Century and Period: 13th century (mid-to-late?), Romanesque
Cognate Fonts: Perhaps from the same workshop as the font in Hohenkirchen
Noted in Kroesen & Steensma (2004) as a font of Baumberg sandstone: "The font in Rastede has eight individual figures under arches, but without dividing columns: Christ, St. Peter and probably six apostles. The vine frieze with fabulous animals is very similar to the one on the slightly conical font in Hohenkirchen, and they both perhaps come from the same workshop [...] The baseplate in Rastede is now lost." [NB: Christ and St. Peter are easily identifiable, but is unlikely that the other figures be Apostles, as one is clearly a woman and another is portrayed very differently from Jesus and Peter, both physically and in his vestments. Could these two figures be patrons or donors?] Described and illustrated in the Parish web site [www.ev-kirche-rastede.de] with date ca. 1250. A recent [October 2007] set of images of this font by Groenling can be seen in FLICKR at [http://www.flickr.com/photos/ana_sudani/sets/72157602870365314/] [accessed 19 April 2008].
