Church Notes: church built mid-late 12thC; expanded and renovated in the 15thC
Noted in Kroesen & Steensma (2004) as a baptismal font of the mid to late thirteenth century made of Baumberg sandstone: like the font in neighbouring Stedesdorf this font "has one figure in each niche, but here the eight figures are more mobile and form part of three stories: the Annunciation, the Adoration of the Magi and the Baptism of Christ. The niches here are part of an arcade with worked capitals on the little columns. Both fonts have a frieze of vines and fabulous animals at the top. The original pedestal of both fonts have been lost." Die St. Marien-Kirchengemeinde Nesse web site [www.kirche-nesse.de] illustrates a true replica of the 13th-century font ["eine originalgetreue Kopie unserer Sandsteintaufe aus dem 12. Jhd'], in which the front arch shows a Baptism of Christ in the Jordan scene under a round arch. On-site notes: the arcade of eight arches includes seven that are round-headed, and one that is trefoil-headed; interestingly the trefoiled arch is occupied by the Madonna and Child, part of the Adoration of the Magi scene; the Baptism of Christ, on the other hand, as well as the Annunciation, is housed under round arches; the baptismal font is now [August 2014] on permanent display at the Ostfriesisches Landesmuseum Emden; a replica of the original is located in the parish church. There is no font cover in the museum, but the font has several marks that evidence the use of a cover on it previously.
