Church Notes: cruciform church built 13thC; lost its transept in re-building ca. 1675; damaged WWII in 1945; repaired 1954; refurbished 2002; free-standing bell tower 1850 -- the dedication to St. Sebastian is probably pre-Reformation but has been kept in the name of the church, which is not common in Reformed churches
A stone font is recorded in the Zeitschrift des Historischen Vereins für Niedersachsen for 1865 (1866: 404) without further details. Noted in Mithoff (1871-1880) and in Ligtenberg (1915) as a font of Bentheim sandstone. Classed in Drake (2002) in a variant group of fonts from the Bentheim School that are actually made of stone from the Baumberg quarries, not those at Bentheim, a characteristic it shares with the font at Neuenkirchen; Drake (ibid.) further notes that the lions at the base of this font, although they are set like most of the ones on Bentheim Chool fonts at 90-degree angles of the central shaft with bodies facing towards it, "their heads look up at the bowl not over their shoulders and their forepaws press against the lower rim of the bowl, not at the junction between bowl and shaft. Noted in Kroesen & Steensma (2004) as a baptismal font decorated "with lions under the bowl", without further details. The Evangelisch-reformierte Kirche entry for Hatzum's church [www.reformiert.de/gemeinde/hatzum.html] [accessed 16 February 2016] reports a 13th-century baptismal font of Bentheim sandstone in it [="Im Bentheimer Stil ist der aus Sandstein gemeißelte Taufstein aus dem dreizehnten Jahrhundert gehalten. Auf einem viereckigen Sockel, der vor den grün gestrichenen hölzernen Kirchenbänken auf rotem Backsteinboden steht, halten vier Löwen das runde mit Ornamenten verzierte Taufbecken."]
