Gough (1792) writes: "Charsfield has had animals squatting on the shaft, and on the vase symbols of the Evangelists and angels alternately." A partial view of the font can be found in Simon Knott's web site [www.suffolkchurches.co.uk/charsfield.htm]; the basin is octagonal, though rather irregular, with deeply-carved panels between buttresses with crocketed pinnacles; the underbowl has angels at the angles, their spread wings crossing and filling the sides between on the upper volume, the lower one showing a rosette on each side; the font is heavily whitewashed, and shows damage to the upper rim consistent with the forceful removal of the staples of the old cover.
