Described in Gough (1792): "octagon, adorned with angels holding shields whited over; lions squatted and wild men standing on the shaft." Parker (1855) mentions "Evangelists on the bowl, and a nearly defaced inscription on the thread of the step" on this font. Listed in Cautley (1982) as 15th-century font bearing an inscription. Knott (1999?) notes the inscription on the lower step of the plinth: "Johannes Smyth et Joanne Rouse". [NB: only four of the sides of the basin have angels holding shields, and, of these, at least one shows an emblem with the three mitres of the See of Norwich. To its left is a full figure of an angel holding a scroll, perhaps the symbol of Matthew]
