Gough (1792) writes: "The font at which the venerable Latimer officiated at Thurcaston is circular and shallow on a hexagon base with niches". [NB: the reference is to Hugh Latimer [1485-1555], bishop of Worcester, burned at the stake as a heretic under Queen Mary I; he is believed to have been born in this village]. Noted and illustrated in Upcott (1818). A brief contribution by "W.S." in the Leicestershire and Rutland Notes and Queries and Antiquarian [...], (vol. 1, 1889-1891: 104) notes: "In this church is still preserved the font at which the reverend bishop was admitted a member of that church which he so eminently adorned. It is of a circular shape, on a hexagon base, with niches." Described in Pevsner (1984): "Font. Perp[endicular].
