Noted in Hutchinson (1823): "The font is a large ancient stone bason." Similarly described in Mackenzie (1834), who places the font "in the space below the tower". Described in Murray (1873): "The font is round, on an octagonal pillar." [NB: the ISEE Gateshead site [http://isee.gateshead.gov.uk] [accessed 15 March 2007] displays a record and image of "Fragment of original font from Holy Cross Church, Ryton" taken from a glass plate negative in the collection of W.A. Cocks of Ryton; the photograph is undated -- We do not know whether or not this is part of the same font reported in Hutchinson ca. 1823, or even if it is the only part left, especially since the web site of The Lastingham Group of Churches [www.lastinghamchurch.org.uk/church_guides/guide_sch.htm] [accessed 16 March 2007]. in its description of St. Chad's church, a chapel-of-ease of Lastingham, in Hutton-in-the-Hole, reports "a font and lectern from Ryton Church"]
