Noted in Gough (1792) as a "square and plain" baptismal font. No font mentioned in Glynne's entry (1877) for this church. Torr (1930) writes: "Of Norman date, the fonts at Upper Hardres, Westwell, Tilmanstone and Fordwich (without angle shafts) may serve as examples of the arcaded bowl type". In Kelly's Directory of 1934 as a Norman font. Noted in Newman (1976): "Font.Norman. Square bowl, wuth five sunk arches per side, standing on five shafts." 'A brief history' of Upper Hardres in the parish web site [www.stelling-minnis.co.uk/church-peterpaul.htm] informs that "the Norman font remains to this day" and that the font was probably moved to the south side in the 14th century.
