Scene Description: Source caption: "Digswell: Parish Church of St John. The church once served the small rural parish of Digswell, but is now in the built-up Digswell Park area of Welwyn Garden City, hence the need for the 1960s extension to cater for the then much expanded congregation. It is on the road known as Monks Rise."

Font Notes:
There are two entries for Digswell [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TL2314/digswell/] [accessed 12 October 2016], neither of which mentions cleric or church in it. An early baptismal font here is reported in Gough (1792), "rudely ornamented with scroll work." A font at Digswell is notted in Archaeologia: Or Miscellaneous Tracts Relating to Antiquity (vol. X, p. 188). Pollard (1907) reports a Norman font at Digswell. The Victoria County History (Hertfordshire, vol. 3, 1912) notes: "The church was given to the abbey of Walden, in Essex, by Geoffrey de Mandeville [+1144], first Earl of Essex, the founder of that monastery […] and lord of the manor of Digswell. […] The original church, probably consisting of a chancel and nave, was built in the 12th century, and to that date the present chancel and nave may probably be referred"; no font is mentioned in the VCH entry. A picture of the font here is listed in 'PARISHES OF COTTERED, DATCHWORTH AND DIGSWELL' [ref.: D/EGr/27], The William Blyth Gerish Collection, held by Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies, not available at The National Archives [digital image of the picture not available at present].
