Lübke (1870) notes a 12th-century metal font "cast by Master Gerardus, rests on three feet, and shows, in relief, the baptism of Christ, and the apostle princes Peter and Paul." Favreau (1985) cites "Die Inschriften de Stadt Osnabrück" p. 8, n. 9, as source for the inscription (Favreau, 1985, footnote 209). On-site notes: baptismal font made of bronze, consisting of a bucket-shaped basin resting on three slender animal legs; at opposite ends on the upper side of the basin are two semicircular handles; there is no real program on the font, but around the upper half of the basin are engraved five semi-circles framed in double lines with inscriptions sandwiched between them; inside the semi-circles are aspects of the Baptism of Christ: one shows a bust of Christ partly submerged in the waters of the Jordan, with only his haloed head and blessing hands protruding from them; another shows John the Baptist; another has an angel; the last two include the Apostles Peter and Paul. There are inscriptions in two other places, the strips that run around the upper rim, and the one around the middle of the basin. The lower end of the basin has a similar strip but it contains no inscription. The font has a metal cover, slightly convex and provided with two handles. The inscriptions are recorded in the Deutsche Inschriften Online. Niedersachsen / Osnabrück [www.inschriften.net/osnabrueck/inschrift/nr/di026-0009.html#content] [accessed 23 January 2015]. The inscription around the rim refers to the salvific power of the sacrament of Baptism and refers to the 'new Adam'; the five inscriptions framing the scenes on the side, identify the persons inside; the inscription around the middle identifies the sponsor (?) of the font as Wilbernus, and the master as Gerardus.
