***This is not a physical font, but a depiction of it over two paintings in the retable of the Capilla Real de Granada*** On-site notes: there are two scenes of mass baptism of Moors from a baptismal font: in the right panel scene, in which all of the baptizends are women, the water of the font is used to spray over the baptizands; in the left panel scene, in which there mostly men but also a few women, some of the baptizands actually lean over the side font while two priests pour the holy water on their heads with their bare hands. The two fonts are similar, though not identical, of the chalice type, with hemispherical basins decorated with a band containing a running inscription on the side, and a large-rib pattern on the underbowl; the stems are foliated and with a central ring moulding in both cases, and the lower base is circular. The retable paintings were done by Felipe de Borgoña, obviously a French painter, around the last couple of years of the construction of the Capilla Real, 1520-1521 [the capilla was started in 1504 as a funeral chapel for queen Isabel of Castille who dies in that year, and for her husband Fernando of Aragon, who died in 1516]. [NB: a good source of information on the period and the conversion practices can be found in Vilar Sánchez (2004)]
