Hutchins (1861-1873) notes: "In the south wall of the tower is a cavity for a holy-water basin", without a mention of the original font. The 3rd ed. of Hutchins (1973 c1861-1874) adds: "A modern octagonal font stands near the west end of the nave. Its eight panels have crocketed and foliated ogee niches, in which are statues of the four Evangelists, Saints Peter and Paul, Philip and James. These niches are divided by crocketed buttress-pinnacles at the angles. The whole is richli carved, and at the base is sculptured this verse from the creed: 'Credo unum baptismum in remissionem peccatorum.'" [NB: the late font, not listed in this Index on account of its modern date, was probably introduced during the re-building of the chancel by Pugin in 1846 or, more likely, the re-building of the nave by John Hicks in 1860]
