Noted in the 3rd ed. of Hutchins (1973 c1861-1874): "A granit basin and pedestal were substituted by the old font in 1782, but in 1852 the latter was again brought to light and replaced on a new base." [NB: both dates appear to coincide with those in which major repairs or rebuilding were done to this church]. Newman & Pevsner (1972) write of a "C17-looking font: the font was given to the church in 1738. It is round and decorated with strapwork. The cover is eminently Comper [i.e., Sir John Ninian Comper, 1864-1960] with extremely elongated columns and with gold and sky-blue." The Dorset Historic Churches Trust [http://dorsethistoricchurchestrust.co.uk] informs: "The font of 1732 and cover designed by Ninian Comper was given by 9th Earl of Shaftesbury."
