Country Name: England
Location: Dorset, South West
Directions to Site: Located on the A350, 19 km N of Blandford Forum [the chapel is located on Murstons Lane]
Font Location in Church: Inside the church
Date: ca. 1664?
Century and Period: 17th century(mid),
In Newman & Pevsner (1972): "Font. Late C17, with a fluted bowl." [NB: Kelly's Directory of 1895 notes that "a Congregational chapel was completed in 1858 on the site of the former chapel, erected in 1662" -- it is quite possible that the font was the original from the old chapel]. The font consists of a round basin on the side of which is a large unscription dedicated to a "John Monde[?]", churchwarden, and dated 1664; below a flat moulding is a band of scalloped motif, the scallops individually decorated with leaves, etc., and fluting or piping issuing from the scallops and forming a ribbed underbowl; cylindrical stem with roll moulding atop; the square lower base has an upper roound moulding and spurs at the corners. Octagonal plinth with kneeling stone. Wooden Jacobean-style font cover consisting of the usual four-ribs-round-a-central-pivot design on a a flat round platform. Noted with an illustration in Flicker, with original from Oxfordshire Church Illustrations [http://flickr.com/photos/oxfordshire_church_photos/304088040/] [accessed 1 August 2007]
