There is a 1773 pencil-on-paper drawing by Samuel Hieronymus Grimm (1733-1794) of this font in the British Library collections [Shelfmark: Additional MS 15538 - Item number: f.9]. Grimm's drawing shows a square basin with tapering sides, raised ona plain quadrangular pedestal base and a lower base, also quadrangular, decorated with graded mouldings. The 3rd ed. of Hutchins (1973 c1861-1874) notes the following: 1)the original Hutchins ed. stated that the Church of Radipole "was anciently the mother-church of Melcombe Regis, but was made a chapel of ease to it in 1605"; 2)there is evidence that the 14th-century church was built "on the site of a previous edifice; as the base of a font, apparently Norman, which was removed from the church, is still preserved in the village" [NB: where is that base now?]; and, 3)"This church was generally restored and re-seated [...] during the past year [i.e., ca. 1862?], and at the same time a handsome modern font was added" [NB: obviously not the same font described in the other sources below]. Described and fully illustrated in Gerald Duke [www.martinstown.co.uk]; the font consists of a basin that was originally square but three of the sides were re-cut in the 16th century to round, leaving one flat, the one against the wall; the original base was made of a central shaft with four outer colonnettes; the current base is a 19th-century restoration/replacement. The Weymouth.here-on-the.net informs that the church was originally built ca. 1250 and was known as St. Mary's until 1605, when the name [and the dedication?] changed to St. Ann's.
