There is a 1773 pencil-on-paper drawing of this font by Samuel Hieronymus Grimm (1733-1794) in the British Library collections [Shelfmark: Additional MS 15537, Item number: f.100]. Noted in the 3rd ed. of Hutchins (1973 c1861-1874): "The font is octagonal. It has a Perpendicular panelled bowl, on a plain stem, below which a more ancient Purbeck marble base shows the sockets of eight smaller pillars." [NB: the lower base referred to in this source appears to have been replaced by a modern one -- cf. infra]. In Mee (1939). Noted in the RCHM (1952) as an octagonal basin dated to the 15th century. Described and illustrated in Gerald Duke [www.martinstown.co.uk]. The font consists of an octagonal bowl raised on a plain octagonal stem, and a lower base of later [modern] date; the sides of the basin are decorated with pairs of trefoiled ogee-headed panels; the modern lower base is moulded. Duke [cf. supra] refers to Hutchins (ibid.) description of the earlier Purbeck stone base which would have had eight outer colonnettes in a design similar to that of the font at Milton Abbey.
