Font Notes:
There are three entries for this Dorchester [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SY6890/dorchester/] [accessed 2 November 2014], reporting two churches and church lands here. The entry for this church in An Inventory of the Historical Monuments in Dorset (vol. 2, Souuth east, 1970) notes: "The reset S. doorway indicates the former existence of a late 12th-century church on the site. The present building, including the Chancel, Nave, Aisles, South Porch and West Tower, is of the 15th century [...] The main restoration of the church was in 1856–7 [...] Further restorations took place in 1905, 1934, and 1961–5"; the entry does not mention a font in it. The baptismal font from the original Perpendicular church of St. Peter's seems to have disappeared. Even by the time of Glynne's visit on 11 October 1825 the font was absent from any description of the church and its contents. Barnes (1891) notes: "The font is modern" [NB: we have no information on the earlier font of the Norman curch either]
