Barnes (1891) writes: Font: the basin and a portion of the pedestal 14th century (late)". Noted in Long (1923) as one of about half-dozen known examples belonging to the Decorated [or 'Second Pointed'] period in Dorset [NB: these include: Hampreston, Nether Compton, West Stafford and Winterborne Compton, as well as the basin of Durweston and, perhaps, Woolland]; Long (ibid.) adds that the basin is "devoid of all ornament" and that the shaft on which it is raised is modern. In the RCHM (1970) with probable date of the 14th century. Described and fully illustrated in Gerald Duke's web site [www.martinstown.co.uk], who notes the inscription "RWS / 1721" in the lead lining of the basin well.
