Font Notes:
Lyme [Regis] [variant spellings] is listed with three owners in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SY3392/lyme-regis/] [accessed 27 October 2019] none of which mentions cleric or church in it. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SY3434092206] notes: "Originally a C12 to C15 cruciform fabric. At end of C15 the old chancel was replaced by a complete church of West Country type." The Dorset Historic Churches Trust [http://dorsethistoricchurchestrust.co.uk/lyme_regis.htm] notes: "The splendid Victorian font in the baptistry under the tower, was erected in memory of Rev. Hodges, vicar 1833-80." The font consists of an octagonal basin raised on a columnar base, and an octagonal lower base/plinth. Tall wooden cover dated 1846 by inscription. The Parish web site [www.lymeregis-parishchurch.org/History of Church.html] [accessed 16 September 2011] notes: "During extensive repairs to the church tower in 1994-5 a late Saxon window, believed to date from around AD 980, was discovered in the south wall of the first-floor ringing chamber and it now seems likely that all but the top third of the tower is largely of Saxon origin. What seems originally to have been a Saxon tower was retained and 'modernised' by the Normans around AD 1120 when they rebuilt the remainder of the church." [NB: we have no information on the earlier font(s) of this church].
