Font Notes:
Noted in the 3rd ed. of Hutchins (1973 c1861-1874): "The font is of doubtful character. It has an octagonal bowl of Purbeck marble upon a circular pedestal with a moulded capital and base. Originally perhaps Norman or Early-English, it seems to have been recut in the 17th century, probably at the time the other work of that date was effected." Long (1923) notes: "Iwerne Courtney has a modern bowl". Mee (1939) suggests: "Perhaps it was the Frekes who had the 13th century font recut". [NB: the Frekes' reference is to the family of Sir Thomas Freke who rebuilt the church in the 17th century]. Newman & Pevsner (1972) write: "Font. Octagonal, of Purbeck marble with one large blank arch-head to each side. If this is Transitional it is totally retooled."
