Scene Description: Source caption: "Church of St Wolfrida, Horton. The church has its origins in the 12th or 13th centuries with restorations in 1869 and 1900. The tower is either by or influenced by Vanbrugh who was working locally. St Wolfrida, who died at Horton as the Abbess of a nunnery. It is the only church in the county dedicated to this lady." [NB: the exterior shape dates to the 1722 re-building of the medieval church]

There is an entry for this Horton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SU0207/horton/] [accessed 11 November 2015]; it reports two churches in it. The 3rd ed. of Hutchins (1973 c1861-1874) notes: "There is a good octagonal Perpendicular font, not now in use. The bowl has trefoils on each panel, and trefoil-headed panels sculptured on the stem." In The Dorset Historic Churches Trust [http://dorsethistoricchurchestrust.co.uk/horton.htm]: an octagonal mounted font probably of a late date [NB: this same source informs that the original Benedictine Abbey in Horton was founded in 961 AD; eventually, after the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the priory church became parish church after 18 March 1539, so it is quite likely that a baptismal font would have been set up after that date -- the church underwent major changes in the 18th century]
